As your representative for Shifnal South, I would like to provide a formal update on several issues currently affecting our town. While the response from Shropshire Council can sometimes be slower than we would hope, please be assured that I am consistently following up on these matters to ensure our community’s concerns are addressed.
Grass Cutting and Maintenance
The state of our green spaces has been a major point of concern. Since 1st April 2026, there has been a significant disruption in service because STAR Housing ceased maintaining several grassed areas without prior notification to the Council. These locations include Barn Road, Greenfields Crescent, Wheatfield Drive, Worfe Road, Botfield Road, High Street, Newport Crescent, Beech Drive, and Newport Road.
Currently, the contractors Kier are working with Shropshire Council to implement a recovery plan for these areas. While a definitive timescale for all discontinued sites is still being established, targeted herbicide treatments are being used to manage significant growth. In the interim, Shropshire Council’s Street Scene team will be mowing the A464 verge to improve the town’s appearance while ownership issues are resolved.
Scheduled Maintenance Dates for Shifnal:
- 24th August 2026
- 28th September 2026
- 19th October 2026

Public Safety: Derelict Property on Aston Street
I have been actively pursuing a resolution regarding the derelict property on Aston Street following reports of unauthorized access by children and general deterioration. While the Council cannot legally force an owner to sell or renovate a private property, they do have the power to board up buildings where there is an “imminent risk”.
An officer has inspected the site, but no immediate access point was identified at that time. I am asking residents for help: if you have a photograph of the specific area where children are entering the building, please provide it to me. This evidence allows the Council to instruct the owner to secure the property within 48 hours. For any active trespassing or safety emergencies, please contact the Neighbourhood Policing team immediately.
Household Waste Site Access
The recent decision to restrict Shifnal residents from using Telford & Wrekin waste sites is highly regrettable. This change increases travel time and environmental impact, and there are valid concerns that it may lead to increased fly-tipping in our local area. I am currently reaching out to the relevant authorities, both at Shropshire Council and Telford Council to advocate for a more sensible, collaborative solution for our residents.
I will continue to monitor these situations closely. My role is to ensure that your voices are heard at the Council level, even when the administrative processes move slowly. If you have further information regarding these or other local issues, please do not hesitate to contact me at ed.bird@shropshire.gov.uk
