Bradford Street
I have previously contacted Shropshire Council about parking around the Town and particularly in Bradford Street, near the co-op after complaints from residents.
The signage indicating that it is a restricted area is too small and insufficient and really I would prefer double yellow lines there.
Response from Shropshire Council:
I understand the restricted parking zone was put in as part of the recent highways project to improve/enhance Shifnal town Centre. The main purpose of restricted parking zones is that they allow parking to be controlled within a designated area but without the need for visually intrusive yellow lines. Unfortunately, the Traffic Regulations do not permit the use of yellow lines within a restricted parking zone.
I’ve raised the parking issue on Bradford Street you have highlighted below with SC’s Parking Enforcement team. They have said if people are able to report specific times that this is happening that would be really helpful. They can do this using the following link – Report illegal parking | Shropshire Council If they have specific times when this parking is taking place then they will plan in some enforcement for those times.

Aston Street Car Park
Following a Town Council meeting last Thursday (24th April), which I attended, it was confirmed that car parking on Aston Street car park would be addressed and is now part of the Town Council’s project plan.
The full list of projects can be found at https://shropshire.gov.uk/committee-services/documents/s37256/Appendix%2015%20-%20Shifnal%20Place%20Plan%20Projects%20February%202024.pdf
My suggestion, and I believe this would be the Town Council’s intention (who control the car park), would be to install parking machines and charge for all day parking. Residents and visitors who wish to visit the shops, hair dressers etc. would have 3-4 hours of free parking.
The car park is far too busy now and it is often difficult to get a free space, particularly in the week. We are fortunate to have a train station in Shifnal but need to take some action now as there is clear evidence of commuters travelling in to take advantage of the free long stay car park, and quick commute to Wolverhampton and Birmingham.

CONFIDENTIALGood morning,
Please also consider that if drivers are missing the signs, they may be parking illegally without realising it. If the residents of Shifnal have access and can use the internet the council may be receiving reports of illegal activity within the permitted parking times.
In my opinion (and it’s only such), yellow lines, although visually intrusive are safer than having vehicles block the road. There were double yellow lines in place before the restricted parking zone was introduced as part of the highway ‘improvements’. I don’t remember people talking about how lovely Shifnal is, except for the double yellow lines….
Can the decision to implement the restricted zone not be reversed just as easily as it was introduced? Alternatively, could the signage be made larger so that drivers are consciously aware they are choosing to park illegally?
Kind regards, Kieran Danby

Thanks for contacting me Kieran. I agree with what you have said and will pursue this if I am re-elected. Best wishes, Ed.
