Local matters in Shifnal

This week I’ve received correspondence on a number of local issues in Shifnal.

Evelith Lane

Earlier in the week, the state of the road surface in Evelith Lane (off Park Lane in Shifnal) went viral on Twitter. The road is in a terrible condition and I have reported this again to Steve Brown at Shropshire Council. Please continue to contact me at ebirdshropshire@gmail.com or tag me on Twitter @EdwardBirdShrop https://twitter.com/EdwardBirdShrop or on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/ed.bird.98096/ . I cannot, unfortunately, guarantee a speedy resolution however, I always raise these issues directly with managers at Shropshire Council and will always get back to you.

Council owned land by Thomas Beddoes development

A local resident this week contacted me to make me aware of the unfinished land under the railway bridge between the Thomas Beddoes development and the Redrow estate Aston Fields.

They noted it had been completed up to a point on either side by the developers but is very uneven not finished and that is very difficult to access with either a pushchair or wheelchair.

Sadly as many of you may be aware, this issue has been ongoing for a long period of time now to the frustration of residents. This has been reported to Shropshire Council on many occasions now for a period of months. This week I raised it again with Shropshire Council’s Developing Highways Manager. At the same time I also asked again about the road adoption of Thomas Beddoes Estate, again something residents are very annoyed about.

Market Place, Shifnal

Whilst taking our dog for a walk with the children earlier this week, I again photographed and reported the state of the building in Market Place which is affecting local businesses. I think the time has come for Shropshire Council to make a compulsory purchase of this building and to then put it on the market for a genuine buyer to develop into a home or businss premises.

TF11 Wombles

I would like to thank volunteers that have been helping to keep Shifnal Tidy. Fly-tipping has seemed to increase dramatically during lockdown and the district has been subject to some disgraceful dumping of rubbish around Shifnal and Tong. The group have recently set up a Facebook page, TF11 Wombles https://www.facebook.com/groups/249047869928305 which I encourage everyone to join.

“In the 2 weeks that the group has been in existence well over 50 bags have been filled by womblers going out individually in the main. The areas that have been cleared are laybys, country roads, hotspots in the town and some wide verges on main roads. There are, however, sections of main roads that need to be left to council operatives for safety reasons. Requests have been made to Shropshire Council to litter pick the 5 main roads that enter our town. There is little indication of anything happening as yet.” As requested I have reported this matter to Shropshire Council’s environmental maintenance officer.

We can all do our bit as we walk around Shifnal and Albrighton, picking up litter when we see it, but ultimately Shropshire Council need to monitor our lanes and I think given the scale of the problem, the police need to find the culprits and prosecute them.

Just some of the rubbish recently collected by local residents

  1. Although not holding my breath that the doctors surgery is going to be completed this year, can we now ask the police if they will do something about the excessive speeding through shifnal, haughton road and lane as an example. Realising this is a service we over pay for with our rates, could they at least try to come to the town to show some willing
