Latest Updates and Issues Reported in Shifnal

Parking in Shifnal and Request for Double Yellow Lines

At the Town Council meeting this week, it has been confirmed that the Town Council, who control that Aston Street card park at the back of the co-op, will be reviewing the parking there with a view to charging long-stay parking, to ensure if commuters do use the car park, that they pay.

I have also requested for double yellow lines to be painted on Bradford Street, on the side of the co-op. This road is already restricted, but the signage is very small, and too often, drivers are parking up on the pavement near the co-op.

Speeding Traffic

I have contacted the police and crime commissioner, John Campion, requesting that speed cameras are installed on the A464 entering and leaving Shifnal. Tragically there was a fatality on the road in 2023, and a number of residents I have spoken to have told me that drivers are still entering and leaving the town at high speeds.

‘Good’ rating from Care Quality Commission for acute wards for adults of working age and  psychiatric intensive care unit

I am delighted to share that our acute wards for working age adults and psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU) have been rated ‘Good’ by the CQC following a reinspection which took place in January.

The services have been rated as ‘Good’ overall, with ‘Good’ ratings across all five of the CQC’s domains – safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led. The CQC recognised the considerable improvements to the service made since its previous inspection in June 2023.

The adult acute wards and PICU are based at St George’s Hospital in Stafford and The Redwoods Centre in Shrewsbury. Our wards support adults with acute mental illness and PICU offers specialised intensive support and treatment to individuals with severe mental health needs.

The report includes feedback from patients, who said they felt safe as well as listened to and supported by staff. Inspectors found patients were supported by staff to understand their care and treatment and understood their individual needs. They also found the services were well staffed.

The CQC’s report observed that de-escalation techniques are used by staff to reduce the need for physical interventions; care records and documentation demonstrated patients were risk assessed before taking leave; and staff effectively communicate with each other and share knowledge.

Furthermore, a number of areas of good practice were identified, such as sensory rooms supporting patients to feel calm and less agitated, and a range of ward-based activities, including those offered by the Trust’s Arts for Health team.

The report demonstrates our commitment to providing the highest quality care possible to our patients and their loved ones, which was also recognised across our acute older adult wards which were rated as ‘Good’ by the CQC in 2024.

Importantly, the CQC has recognised the hard work of our staff, and I thank them for their unwavering dedication, and innovation in embracing new ways of working to make a difference for patients and their loved ones.

You can find the report on the CQC’s website – report into acute wards for adults and psychiatric intensive care unit MPFT.
